Primarily, I'm a colourist. My paintings start with a colour, a stroke, or a line and I try to suspend my critical mind and use my energy so that the painting is free. Not uncommonly I use anything to make the painting work - sponge, kitchen roll, sandpaper, stick and at the same time try not to become too attached as I'm working so my playful, imperfect humanity evolves.

I began painting seriously in the mid nineties when living in Brixton and I'd started to practise Nichiren Buddhism with SGI, a global non - governmental organisation that works for peace through individual inner transformation. At that stage I didn't realize I was an artist, but I was tired of trying to escape, and wanted to change. I got the courage to overcome my fear and to focus on painting. I started with some dyes watered on paper. I hadn't been to art school but had always found solace in the creative side of depression, and I then painted on any bits and pieces I could find.

Now, I suppose my story telling 'scapes are an expression of an internal world with influences of the sea and space in a free, fluid, playful way. The thing is not to rush ahead and make the painting something it isn't!! So I play until I feel happy with them and people can form their own unique connections. I hope they are uplifting. Also over the years I have done workshops with children and that encourages me to keep being playful!
